‘In ‘t Spinnekopke’ on the Bloemenhofplein opens its doors again | Brussels
After two weeks of closure, it is possible to dine again in ‘In ‘t Spinnekopke’ on the Bloemenhofplein. The brasserie was not doing so well a while ago, but a recent takeover has given the business a new lease of life.
‘In ‘t Spinnekopke’ has become an integral part of the Bloemenhofplein. The brasserie in the 18th-century building has been serving as a meeting place for local residents for more than 40 years. The business has not gone well in recent times, but the new takeovers want the brasserie back to its former glory.
“When we got here, there was a lot of work to do,” says Esther, the new manageress. She lives around the corner. “We have a lot of additions, from the windows to the kitchen. But otherwise we have changed little. The charm of ‘In ‘t Spinnekopke’ lies in the atmosphere it has. We would like to keep that.”
Neighborhood meeting place
The new owners want the business more close to the neighbourhood. “I distributed 800 flyers in the neighborhood before the opening. We would like the brasserie to become a meeting place for local residents again,” says Esther. “That was less the case in recent years. ‘In ‘t Spinnekopke’ is a place where people from the neighborhood have a nice drink together or can enjoy a spaghetti and a glass of wine. We would like to restore that function.”
Another cool anecdote: “The story is that a boy lived nearby who worked in a doll shop. He dated a girl who lived on a different street. But because they were both of different ranks, they couldn’t see each other. That’s why they secretly arranged to meet in ‘In ‘t Spinnekopke’”, Esther beams. “So you see, everyone is welcome here.”
