Hanover (dpa / lni) – A legal report has given the green light for the introduction of joint Christian religious education in Lower Saxony. “It forms a secure constitutional basis for the upcoming decision-making processes,” said Kerstin Gäfgen-Track, representative of the Confederation of Protestant Churches in Lower Saxony on Monday. Appropriate plans were announced by Protestants and Catholics a year ago. The joint religious instruction is intended to replace denominational separate instruction and continue to be open to non-baptized students. According to the state church in Hanover, the model is unique in this form in Germany.
According to the churches, the number of Christian students has been falling for years, but religious instruction is still in high demand, it said. All teachers who are authorized to teach Protestant or Catholic religious education should also be able to teach the common subject in the future, the churches emphasized when the project was presented a year ago. The joint religious instruction could start in the 2023/2024 school year.
