We calculated! Taxis became so much more expensive in Budapest after the tariff increase – Metropol
Starting from Monday, getting on a taxi has become more expensive, and this is still evident in the number of transports: there are far fewer taxis in Budapest. However, the sector needed a 35% increase, as the last time there was a tariff increase was in 2018, so plenty of people left the field there under the coronavirus. While in 2019 more than 7,000 taxis were licensed to use the capital’s drone, that number was only 5,000 this year. The main reason for this was that at the beginning of the year, taxi drivers generally did not have enough income to sustain their businesses.
For the time being, there is less freight
About Metropol’s experience with increased tariffs Zoltán Metálhe asked the president of the National Taxi Association.
“Based on the numbers of the first days, it can be said that a 10-20% reduction in the number of freight can be felt. However, we have found this to be the case, as the decline has been similar in recent decades, ”said the president of the National Taxi Association, but added that he expects the mood to taxi to recover in 1-2 months.
Taxi drivers may also increase costs
There are two options for taxi drivers in the next period: they will either increase their fees to taxi companies or compete for companies.
“After each tariff increase, the transport organizers (the companies that bring together the taxi drivers and provide them with addresses) also want to enforce all service tariff increases. This is what taxi drivers who contract with them should expect. However, these increases can be very variable, ”said Zoltán Metál, who said that transport organizers may end up competing for taxi drivers, as there are currently not enough in the profession.
Passengers are also understanding about the lift
Despite less freight, it looks like the overall position of drivers is raising tariffs.
“Based on feedback so far, the majority of taxi drivers are happy with the increase in their revenue as it compensates for their losses so far. It is only interesting that the passengers accepted and understood the level of the fare increase, “the President concluded.”
The change was felt from Tuesday
Sanyi: 20-30 is enough I think the passenger. People still have to get used to this because there are a lot of frequent flyers called every day. We find that more frequent flyers no longer call. no one was surprised by the prices. I didn’t feel the change on Monday, but I did on Tuesday.
Sándor: Smaller transports have specifically disappeared. The bigger ones, i.e. the regular customers, are happy for him. I find that everyone is happy that it is easier to get a car. There has been no price since 2018, and that’s partly why I feel people are welcomed positively. It will only be clear to me at the end of the month if I have done better and how much my costs will go up.
We tried it: On average, a shipment is more than 1,100 forints more
With the toll calculator on főtaxi.hu, people can stay up to date with the time and price of their trip. Using the calculator, we compared the old price of the test trips mentioned in a previous article in Metropol with a new tariff increased by 35%.

- An older lady got sick in Wesselényi Street and wants to get to János Hospital: Previous toll: 2729–3336 forints, 17 minutes. – Now: 3600-4400 forints, 16 minutes.
- A resident of Csepel returning from a holiday at Lake Balaton would like to take a taxi home from the Southern Railway Station: Previous toll: HUF 3888–4752, 19 minutes. – Current: HUF 5281-6455, 19 minutes
