Summer holidays 2022: in this context of open borders without the need for tampons or certifications, there is a great desire to travel and it is time to start thinking about foreign destinations. Have you already started planning or choosing where to go this summer? If you are looking for international locations but still ‘behind the corner‘(and easy to reach by car, train or bus), le summer holidays in Austria offer many possibilities for recreation, relaxation or fun: alpine mountains, unspoiled natural environments, locations suitable for families with children, trekking and mountaineering, cities of art and culture, a large number of bathing lakes, even large ones such as the Worthersee in Carinthia.
Without forgetting Vienna, a city full of possibilities and opportunities for unforgettable summer holidays: in addition to the most popular and purely touristic places (Cathedral, Prater, Belvedere, Opera, Schönbrunn Palace, etc.), the Museum Quartier alone is worth a trip, the large body of water formed by the branch of the Danube (the Alte Donau) places of leisure and sport and you can navigate with electric boats kilometers easy to steer while a few from the city center for recreation there are spas with healthy water or paths in the green on the hills around the city.
Choosing to spend your summer holidays in Austria means being able to enjoy a high-level quality of services (the hotels as well as the smallest guesthouses are lovingly cared for) and a widespread attention to the natural environment.
Austria was a true pioneer of sustainability and eco-compatibility: perhaps some of you remember the Austrian pavilion set up for the Milan Expo, already at the time the message was focused on respect for nature and the environment for guarantee an ecological and conscious liveability. The fir and larch grove for the occasion was an invitation to ‘breathe’ (the slogan repeated precisely ‘breathe’breathe).
Austria as a holiday destination for Italian tourists is an ‘easy destination’, it can be reached on the motorway via Brennero or via Tarvisio. In addition, many airlines land at Vienna Schwecat airport and some also at Salzburg airport; direct trains (or at most with one change) arrive Innsbruck, Klagenfur, Salzburg, Vienna. And from Venice the Netflix buses arrive directly in Vienna.
What the tourist discovers during his summer holidays in Austria is a true reality, passionate, attentive, respectful of its traditions, certainly not a postcard representation. In the Austrian countryside the crops are really cared for with love and following traditional methods, in small villages people greet each other with kindness, in the alpine villages the farms, with their typical architectures that exploit the materials, seem to anticipate the canons of bio mentrearchitettura l he elegance and refinement of the larger cities are nothing more than the legacy of a truly imperial history.
It is no coincidence that I used the term ‘really’: Austria has chosen as its reference hashtag #realAustria. Real Austria, ready to welcome tourists in general and Italian tourists in particular.
Summer holidays in Austria 2022: events
Alongside the ‘classic’ opportunities for wonderful summer holidays in Austria (in the blog, if entered in the search field “Austria”, you will find numerous articles on Austrian places that I have visited and that I recommend), events are scheduled for 2022 in and exhibitions that can make it even more beautiful and interesting. I would like to point out some of them (thanks the Austrian Tourist Board for this information):
until the June 12, 2022 the city (declared Unesco heritage for Design) hosts the Design Month Graz, with meetings, events, initiations of designers, universities and companies. The driving theme is linked to the green transition and the sustainable future and we investigate the role that design will play, which will no longer be oriented only to the individual but to the community. More information: Graz official tourism website.
a few kilometers from the city center, in the middle of the woods, there is a beautiful white castle, from the sixteenth century, commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand II, the Schloss Ambras. The Castle is also famous for its precious Wunderkammer, or room of wonders of the collections, that is an eclectic and astonishing collection of historical and naturalistic collections over time by the Archduke. A private museum even before the very concept of a museum was widespread. From 16 June to 2 October 2022 a thematic exhibition – “One Word” – links the rarities kept in the Wunderkammer with current themes and with climate change. More information: official website of the Ambras Castle (only in German) or on the Innsbruck’s official tourism website.
- Carinthia and Klagenfurt:
- in the border city, indeed of the three borders (Austria, Italy and Slovenia), from 9 to 25 September 2022 the Days of Alpe Adria Cuisine will take place, with refined culinary events and meetings between chefs and producers from Friuli, Veneto, Carinthia, Styria and Slovenia. There will be cooking classes, book presentations, tasting menus with a focus on typical products in what is an event that celebrates the meeting of gastronomic culture that have a lot in common. For more information: Klagenfurt official tourism website.
- In Carinthia, 14 Slow Trails have been created, non-demanding trails (the differences in height never exceed 300 meters) to be covered according to your own pace surrounded by enchanted and always close to one of the beautiful Carinthian lakes. Each path has its own particularity and everyone can relax and bathe for a moment, both in lakes and in mossy streams. The Slow Trail was born from the project of the consortium “Urlaub I’m seeing”(Holidays on the lake) to which Carinthian lake destinations have joined: the tourist area of Villach, the tourist area of Nassfeld / Pramollo, the Lesachtal valley, the Millstätter See lake; Lake Faak, Lake Ossiach, Lake Wörthersee, Lake Klopeiner See, Lake Pressegger See, Lake Weissensee. More information on the official website of Carinthia
In 2022 Linz becomes the city of women, to which it dedicates exhibitions and theatrical performances. A path is also created, the “Walk Fem”, which pays homage to 63 women who have contributed to the development of the city and society and stimulates a change in mentality. If the Schlossmuseum Linz will present installations by the Austrian artist Brigitte Kowanz, the Lentos Kunstmuseum in Linz will dedicate three thematic exhibitions to three artists: the painting with a political background of the Bauhaus pupil Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, the visualization of light and seasonal colors of Inge Dick, Iris Andraschek’s analysis of the question of a more just coexistence between humanity and nature. In the beautiful city of the Prince Bishops, Unesco heritage and in my opinion one of the Austrian cities that you absolutely must visit at least once in your life, from 18 July to 31 August 2022 The Salzburg Festival is back, an unmissable event for all lovers of high-level music that puts on 174 shows in 45 days. There will also be the opportunity to attend video broadcasts of festival performances in Kapitelplatz square. Also in summer, the “midday music” at the Duomo is not to be missed: seven play together. For more information: Salzburg’s official tourism website.
A photographic exhibition Wien Museum MUSA and to get into the spirit of the city knowing its evolution from 1860 to the present day. The exhibition is “Augenblick! Street Photography in Vienna ”and will be open from May 19 to October 23, 2022. The selected images tell of a vital and in a certain sense popular Vienna, in which the protagonists more than the people are the places: streets, squares and markets. It is an urban photography that outlines the evolution of the Danube metropolis hand in hand with the evolution of photography up to Instagram. A Wien Museum competition is also linked to the exhibition: you participate by posting a photo of street photography of Vienna on Instagram with the hashtag # Augenblick2022. More information: Vienna’s official tourism website and official site of the Vienna Museum.
