The first probable case of severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology was registered in the Republic of Moldova. An announcement to this effect was made today by the Ministry of Health.
According to the Ministry of Health, a sick child was admitted on May 7 to the Municipal Clinical Hospital for Infectious Diseases of Children in Chisinau, with symptoms specific to acute viral hepatitis. It is in serious but stable condition.
“Complex investigations have been carried out, but all evidence of known liver viruses is negative and other causes of liver damage have also been ruled out. The case is considered to be of unknown etiology. The child is currently hospitalized. ., being in serious condition, but stable “, mentioned the Representatives of the Ministry of Health.
The Ministry of Health noted that the investigations, in accordance with the recommendations of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization (WHO), are underway to determine the cause of the symptoms.
According to WHO data, as of May 10, 348 probable cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology had been reported in 21 countries. Epidemiological and clinical information on the public health event remains limited.
To date, no causal agent has been identified. Further data are collected and various studies are performed. More evidence is expected in the coming weeks to be able to be determined and, based on them, recommendations will be issued to establish the necessary prevention and control actions.
