Traffic – Frankfurt am Main – blocked tracks and stops: trouble caused by illegal parking – economy
Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – If an illegal parker blocks tracks or a stop, this means considerable delays for many public transport passengers. Increased controls can help. The Frankfurt Transport Authority (VGF) is also testing sensors on a street that warn drivers to leave enough space for the trams when parking. The test phase has been running for about a year.
The problem on the street in the Niederrad district is that cars are often parked too far on the street and therefore too close to the tracks, explains a VGF spokeswoman. Small sensors were therefore installed in ten parking spaces as a test. If a car is parked, warning signs will light up asking them to keep the area operated by the tram clear. The corona pandemic makes an interim assessment difficult, said the spokeswoman. But it turns out that the number of illegal parkers has fallen. The pilot project should continue for the time being.
The transport companies in other Hessian cities also report major problems with illegal parkers, on average there are almost 200 per year in Darmstadt. According to the transport company ESWE, bus and environmental lanes are affected in Wiesbaden, which are actually intended to prevent local public transport, according to a spokesman. Illegal parking causes significant disadvantages for passengers, slows down bus traffic and also makes the job of a bus driver particularly challenging. Ideas are currently being collected to counteract the obstruction of bus lanes and bus stops.
