The treasure of Csepel is worth a visit to one of the most versatile districts of Budapest
Csepel is undoubtedly one of the most diverse districts of the capital, as in addition to the abundance of panels, it is home to several gastronomic destinations, from natural treasures to architectural masterpieces. We will show you our favorite sights in Csepel, which we think are worth visiting here.
Church of the Assumption, St. Imre Square
The most ornate ornament of St. Imre Square, considered the center of Csepel, is undoubtedly the Church of the Assumption, built in the Romantic style, its predecessor was probably built in the Middle Ages. A devastating flood in the mid-1800s damaged the church so much that it had to be demolished. It was then that the parish church was built between 1857 and 1862, the plans of which are connected to the Zitterbarth family of architects.
Periferico Restaurant
At first glance, we wouldn’t necessarily visit the Periferico restaurant in Csepel, no matter how bad it would be, as we risk getting the best pizza in the area here. There’s no downtown chic waiting here, but at least the prices aren’t gone, which you can be sure of is that you’ll get frills-free Neapolitan pizza made from quality ingredients. Local consumption is only possible from Friday to Sunday, but can be ordered from them every day of the week.

György Kolonics promenade
One of the best kept secrets of Csepel is undoubtedly the romantic, beautifully well-kept promenade on the banks of the Little Danube, which was named in 2017 after the deceased world champion canoe György Kolonics. The five-kilometer path along the current water is unique in the capital, as you can’t find a built-in promenade anywhere near Budapest so close to the Danube for such a long time. The green island is occupied in good weather by families, dogs, cyclists and athletes, while one or two kayakers swim on the water from time to time.
Hekksziget in Csepel
Csepel Hekksziget is characterized by a retro sense of life in a good sense, where concerts with a family atmosphere are held from time to time. The decoration is colorful and can rightly be called unusual, it is enough to think of sports shoes tied to the pallets by their laces. The venue is the beautiful bank of the Danube, a calmer part of it, in such an environment it is good to sip a cup of life-saving coffee, sign up for a delicacy burger, or try the place’s famous name-name specialty, hake.

Daru-hill
A few years ago, the local government of Csepel started to renovate the Crane Hill, which is part of today’s longest coastal section of Budapest, the György Kolonics Promenade, within the framework of which the popular public park was rethought and renovated. Today, a popular recreation area has advanced in the green area, where you will find, among other things, a skatepark, a fitness park, a BMX track, benches and a public restroom, yet its main ornament is a group of statues of our ancient ancestors rising at the top of the hill.
Little Danube Bay
Just a few minutes walk from the Határ utca stop of the 151 bus, you can also find the romantic Little Danube Bay along the György Kolonics promenade, which preserves special natural values. Crossing the renovated wooden bridge, we can observe a unique world in the water of the riverbed and in its immediate vicinity, where not only water species and groves add color to the landscape, but also lively fauna is hidden. Among other things, aquatic insects, birds and fish show themselves around here.
Panels at the Csepel Market
It is no coincidence that Panelpék’s well-known and recognized handicrafts can be found in many parts of Budapest, as only demand stimulates supply. To the great delight of the people of Csepel, we can also buy in the market of the district from the unadulterated, hand-made products of Panelpék, about which those who have just tasted the ode. At the Csepel Market, you can refuel with delicacies such as sourdough bread, cocoa snails and cottage cheese from 7 am to 2 pm from Wednesday to Saturday.
