Cities have always been the fulcrum of life, but for a long time, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they experienced a strong brake, which mainly affected the travel sector. (THE ON THE ROAD TRAVEL COLUMN) To relaunch visits to European cities, the Vienna Tourist Board launches the international project “United City of Tourism”, which promotes the Austrian capital and at the same time six European countries: Germany, Switzerland, Italy, UK, Spain and France.

From May until June 30, 2022, for every 100 tourists who go to Vienna, the Viennese Tourist Board will send a fellow citizen to one of the 17 cities: Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Zurich, Basel, Geneva , Rome, Milan, Florence, London, Manchester, Barcelona, Paris, Lyon and Nice. You will need to register on the official portal to try to get one of the many return tickets made available by Austrian Airlines and ÖBB, which will allow you to reach Vienna or the cities of Florence, Rome and Milan by plane or train. A concrete alliance between European cities aimed at new development, exchange of knowledge, creation of values. The “United Cities of Tourism” day will also be set up on 15 May together with the tourist offices in the cities of London, Paris, Berlin, Milan and Barcelona. Each city on its Instagram profile will show postcards of another destination, with the addition of the “scroll up” to know the initiative.
The city break
“United Cities of Tourism” promotes the so-called “city break”, that is the short stay in a destination, the mini trip from one to four days. Before Covid, this way of traveling made it possible to record higher growth rates in European tourism. Only Vienna in 2019, for example, it counted 17.6 million overnight stays, exceeding for the first time the threshold of one billion euros in turnover in the hotel sector.
