Prague chooses the architectural form of the cable car Podbaba – Troja – Bohnice – Cysnews
Dopravní podnik hl. m of Prague (DPP) is preparing to announce an architectural competition for the design of the station and supports of the planned new cable car Podbaba – Troja – Bohnice. The competition is open to all architects and studios that deal with the design of transport structures. Applicants can apply to participate in the competition until the end of May. The winner will be decided by an eleven-member jury during August this year. The winner will receive a reward of 1.8 million crowns. The conditions of the architectural competition are published by DPP on its profile in the Tender arena no later than Monday, May 9, 2022.
Cable car Podbaba – Troja – Bohnice, the preparation and implementation of which was entrusted to DPP on the basis of the decision of the City Council. m of Prague (RHMP) dated 15 June 2020.
It will have three stations and five supports located between them. The path of the cable car will have one branch, and thus a single drive unit, which will drive the rope in both its sections. The subject of this competition is the architectural design of all three cable car stations, ie the lower station Podbaba, the intermediate station Troja and the upper station Bohnice, as well as five supports. Two of them will be located on Císařský ostrov and three will be located in the sloping terrain of the intermediate station and the upper station of Bohnice.
The competition is open to all architects and studios, Czech or foreign, who have experience in designing transport structures. Those interested in participating in the competition must submit their portfolio in the first step together with the completed application, there will be at least two transport constructions, preferably already completed or in the project phase for a building permit. Interested parties have until the end of May to register for the competition. Applications and their portfolio can be submitted in Czech, Slovak or English. From the registered candidates, the jury will select five, which will have the task of preparing and submitting architectural designs for all stations and cable car supports by the end of July. The competition for DPP studio is organized by the architectural office MOBA.
“The cable car between Podbaba and Bohnice will finally take concrete shape, as it has been clear so far how high it will be over the Vltava and the terrain, but we will only now find out how the whole building will aesthetically affect the surroundings. It is still true that the cable car is the fastest possible way to connect Prague 6 with Prague 8 via Troja with sufficient capacity, although this project still faces a demanding permitting route. We will present the results in a few months and then the design work will start in full. That’s it. The people from six and eight have been waiting a long time for a proper connection. If today you need to get from the Krakow stop in the Bohnice housing estate to Vítězné náměstí, you have to take a bus to Kobylis, from there by metro to Vltavská and then by tram. Or from Kobylis by metro to the center with a transfer to the Museum and then up again to Dejvická. Both variants take 40 minutes. We will shorten the journey by cable car to 15 minutes with the way to its stops, “he said Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Mayor for Transport and Chairman of the DPP Supervisory Board.
“Transport constructions, whether they are metro stations or cable cars, undoubtedly deserve a quality architectural design. In this case, the architects will find it more complicated, because they will have to deal with a number of limitations and take into account several facts and intentions of the city. First of all, that the lower station and intermediate stations are in the flood area of Prague, ie it will be necessary to take into account the location of technologies. In the case of the cable car to Bohnice, the engine room and depot will be located in the Troja intermediate station. This means that space must be reserved for the engine, the main control room, the main power supply, the gearbox, the braking devices and the backup generator. In the case of the upper station Bohnice, it is also very important that there is a connection to the planned stop of the new tram line Kobylisy – Bohnice, which will pass under the station of the cable car. the resulting architectural design of the station and supports will have a significant impact on the environmental impact assessment of the project. I firmly believe that those interested will undertake the task responsibly and will be the result of a modern and fully functional building that respects its surroundings, “ said Jan Šurovský, Member of the Board of Directors and Technical Director of DPP – Surface.
The winner will be decided by an eleven-member jury
Both experts and DPP will be represented in it, hl. m Prague and all three affected city districts. The winner will receive a reward of 1.8 million crowns and his task will be to further develop the architectural design into its final form and provide cooperation during the entire process of project preparation of the cable car, its construction until commissioning. The author of the proposal, who placed second, will receive a reward of 1.2 million crowns, the third in the order of 800 thousand crowns, the proposals in the fourth and fifth place will receive 350 thousand crowns.
Basic technical and technological solution of the cable car
Podbaba – Troja – Bohnice will be a cable car of the so-called circulating type, ie the transport rope always in the same direction, while maintaining the same speed. The cabs are detachable from the tow and conveyor ropes and their speed is reduced on arrival at the station to allow safe boarding and alighting.
The cableway system will be three-rope (so-called 3S system), where the carrying and pulling functions are separated from each other – support is provided by two ropes instead of one. One rope is therefore towed and two load-bearing. In this way, the support is really strong and allows the cable car to carry large cabins to provide more space. The cabins of the three-rope system usually have a capacity of 30 to 35 seats, including 24 to 28 seats, and all are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Is possible
carry a wheelchair, bicycle or pram. The three-rope technology also allows a wider spacing between the supports (up to 3,000 m) and is stable in the wind (comfort up to 100-110 km / h). Depending on the cabin interval, a transport capacity of 2,000 to 4,500 people per hour in one direction is expected.
The cable car will only operate during the day. At night, all cabins will be parked at the Troja service station (intermediate station), where the cable car engine room will also be located. The brake system will always contain two brakes – service and emergency. The system will be compulsorily backed up by an emergency (evacuation) drive, which is independent of the main drive and thus allows the cab to return
in emergency mode to the station by pulling the rope by an independent device.
Expected cable car parameters
- Route length: 2,240 meters
- Speed between stations: 6.5 m / s
- Cabin capacity: 35 persons
- System capacity: 2,000 people per hour in one direction
- Driving time for passengers in the whole section: 6.9 min
- Operating speed: 19.4 km / h
- Number of cabins: 17
- Support height: No. 1 = 35 m, No. 2 = 44 m, No. 3 and 4 = both 29 m, No. 5 = 25 m.
Podbaba, Troja and Bohnice will be connected thanks to the cable car within five years, the journey will take 7 minutes
