Lithuania is among the countries with the most road signs: will this make traffic safe?
Lithuania is among the countries with the most road signs and it seems that they are growing. Will it make traffic safer? LNK is talking to Vidas Žurauliai, a professor at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University.
– Whoever reads will adapt the requirements to their driving, it is likely that they will actually be useful. For those who ignore and present with traffic problems, this will be another place of dissatisfaction.
– What should you know about traffic changes?
– Our lives, vehicles, habits are changing. There are various legal conflicts that we seek to adjust by rules and laws. Traffic is a very defined thing.
– How often do road signs change elsewhere in Europe? Will it only apply to electric scooters?
– Speed reduction in central traffic areas. Not a single city in Europe has introduced this. This results in modifications to the requirements. Drivers, road users want the changes to be kept to a minimum so that the rules they have learned and mastered apply at all times. However, new vehicles are emerging, which means that the rules need to be applied and adapted, because the aim is to move safely.
– One of the changes will involve driving in lane A. Will the road sign be understood and comfortable by everyone?
– When duplication or multiple adjustments occur, multiple types of A-band do not provide clear messages. In traffic, it is very important to be logical. That when you see the symbol, the sign, everything is clear and there are no questions asked. If the signs are clear and there are not too many of them, it should make sense and have a positive effect.
Full report – in LNK video:
– How do you think the labeling won’t be too much? Up to five vehicles can appear on the sign.
– A person can process five or six actions at a time to the best of his ability. In this case, if we need to assess, reflect and understand whether this applies to you, we are approaching the limit. Signs must be coupled and maintained, especially if they are horizontal markings. After winter, it wears out. There are nuances and shortcomings.
– What to do for a foreigner?
It is to be welcomed that cars are still allowed to drive there, as this will probably not be the case in the long run.
– Practical advice – do as others do. The driver must take responsibility when arriving in another country. Check with the camper beforehand. Because it is already a different vehicle, additional requirements may apply.
– Are there fairly common road signs across Europe? Entering a small country like Lithuania, there are signs that are not found anywhere else.
– The main signs provided for in the Signal Convention have survived. Maybe different shades, silhouettes. There are nuances and the state decides to restrict the traffic of scooters, electric scooters, and will introduce slow-speed streets. This is not a basis for changing fundamental things, but it is important that the logic of the characters remains.
– Do these changes comply with the basic rules of the Signals Convention?
– I think so. There are a few that only clarify to avoid further legal nuances. Some are still being carried out, kept by them, only they have not been formalized.
– One of the changes will include slow-moving streets. Bicycles and other facilities will have more priority. Does it show that our lives are changing?
– It is a tribute to sustainable and harmonious movement. We need to realize that the central parts of the city will no longer be attractive to car traffic, the streets will no longer be wider, with few intersections. There will be areas where priority is given to pedestrians and cyclists. It is to be welcomed that cars are still allowed to drive there, as this will probably not be the case in the long run. The car must give preference to cyclists, pedestrians, because that is their area.
– Are you sure you want to avoid trouble?
– It can be anything. If there is a clear message to the road user, there will be markings, the information broadcast, I think, should work. The road should speak for itself, ie if the driver sees a narrow street with pedestrians and cyclists nearby, it is a strange place for the car, so he has to adapt to the road users, drive at minimum speed.
