US pressure on Greece for S-300s is intensifying
NATO covers the anti-aircraft umbrella of Slovakia with American-made anti-aircraft systems at a time when drinks are intensifying towards Greece.
The 40 defense ministers, who maintain friendly and allied ties with the United States inside and outside NATO, gathered at the US air base in Ramstein, Germany, on Tuesday, April 26, at the initiative of US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Armed Forces General Mark Miley.
The aim was to mobilize all countries to send military equipment to Ukraine to stop Russian aggression by invading its territory.
There was the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos and the head of GEETHA, General Konstantinos Floros.
The “two” were among the few who received allied “pressure” to send additional military equipment, in addition to the 2 loaded C-130s, to Ukraine. Greece has several systems of Russian origin, which can be operated directly by the Ukrainian soldiers, without the slightest training, something that he had emphasized to the signatories and the spokesman of Volodymyr Zelensky, Sergi Nikolaou in exclusive statements.
Greece in no case at this time can enter the process of sending military equipment without immediate replacement systems. Namely air defense systems, given that the country has already sent a Patriot artillery to Saudi Arabia.
The example of Slovakia is contrasted with any pressure, but it does not cover the Greek demands in any way.
The Dutch-German Patriot mission in Slovakia, developed at the Sliac air base as a replacement for the S-300s it sent to Ukraine, is by no means a recipe that Greece could accept. And this – mainly – because in Greece the anti-aircraft umbrella operates exclusively from the system of the Greek Armed Forces while the “borrowing” of systems does not create the flexible conditions for the operation of the country’s defense.
The corresponding replacement of weapons systems should be accompanied by a simultaneous replacement of a similar or superior weapon system, which if it does not strengthen at least will keep the country’s defense umbrella at the same levels.
To this end, despite the fact that there are solutions for replacement systems, there has not been an explicit report with timelines, but at the same time with a clear attitude towards Turkey by all. Whether they are allies inside and outside NATO, or even Ukraine, which the Greek government has proven support for. That is why the Greek side claims that “whatever it had to send, it sent”.
