There will soon be no more Bischof-Janssen-Straße in Hildesheim. The responsible local council voted on Wednesday evening to rename the street. As a city spokesman said, it will be renamed Marie-Wagenknecht-Straße. Wagenknecht was a local politician and one of the founders of the Callable Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO). Janssen, who died in 1988, was the first bishop in Germany to be personally accused of child sexual abuse. These accusations could neither be proven nor refuted. However, Janssen is said to have known about cases of sexual violence in his church and tolerated them. This was the conclusion of a recently published report.
