Cycling Prague: Once a month, almost half a million Praguers sit on a bicycle
Prague wants to continue to support the development of bicycle transport this year as well. According to the cycle counters, of which about 30 are installed in the metropolis, about 5.9 million transits were recorded in 2021. According to the data available on the Golemio web platform, the busiest route on the Podolské nábřeží is clearly the most popular, followed by Rohanské nábřeží and Rohanský ostrov or Povltavské. It is the first three places that should be increased.
“Of course, this is not possible everywhere, we have to make compromises between felling greenery and widening cycle paths, but at least on Rohan Island we will widen the bike path“Said Adam Ascheinherr, Deputy Mayor for Transport (Prague himself).
Another significant change will be motorless underpass of Mánes bridge, thanks to which cyclists will pass a difficult crossroads in Klárov. A new cycle belt on Smetana embankment and will begin to serve a part of the sidewalk along Strakonická will be reserved for cyclists street near the Smíchov distillery. New cycle paths should also be created from the footbridge under the Municipal Ring Road to Komořany, from Labut in Krč in Kačerov, along Staroklánovická Street or from Průmyslová Street in Jahodnice. The A22 trail from Braník will also be extended.
Even this year, the capital will continue to mark cycle lanes in places where it is not possible to build separate two-way two-way trails in sufficient parameters. Emphasis is also placed on avoiding lanes for cars. Bike lanes are often the subject of passionate debate. Especially when people think that they are taking the place of cars and therefore unnecessary congestion arises.
But according to Scheinherr, this is not true and the city is trying to use new information signs about enlightenment. “The so-called “Protective” cycle lanes are marked only with horizontal traffic signs and cars can enter them during avoidance, detour or other sudden situation, provided that the cyclist does not move in the laneScheinherr explained. “Buses or trucks can use these lanes, but cyclists still have to go around at a safe distance,” he added.
The municipality has already installed information signs in nine localities and on the Plzeňská, Mariánské hradby, Jelení, Keplerova, Evropská roads, in localities where this lane is already marked. “The marking of the cycle lane is the only option on some roads how to legally allow cyclists and cars to pass each other without drivers having to cross the side lane when overtaking the cyclist. Especially in places with heavier traffic, every deceleration or yaw of the car (not only because of cyclists) has a domino effect, which manifests itself in the next tens or hundreds of meters in the backward direction. As a result, this effect has partially closed. ”Scheinherr
In 2021, Prague will invest 122 million crowns in the development of bicycle transport
