Salzburgring: Histo Cup race too loud again
timeline
After the Histo Cup race at the Salzburgring in Flachgau, residents again complained to the state of Salzburg about noise pollution. The Greens are now demanding a concept for noise reduction from the operator.
A measuring station at the race track records the noise pollution at the Salzburgring. It shows that the ring is mostly booked with auto test days. Noise peaks of 66 decibels are listed – this corresponds to the volume of a lawnmower. Racing weekends with historic vehicles are among the noisy days. Peaks of 102 decibels were measured at the Histo Cup race last year.
102 decibels – as loud as a circular saw
That’s as loud as a circular saw. “Annoying, unnecessary noise, we suffer from it” – wrote residents now after the race weekend in an email to the office of Deputy Governor Heinrich Schellhorn from the Greens. Schellhorn: “That is also the reason why the management of the Salzburgring has to present a catalog of measures so that I can extend the contract with a clear conscience. I will not sign the contract extension without a well-founded noise reduction concept.”
Operator: “Noise reduction concept already in progress”
The operator of the Salzburgring is irritated: A concept for noise reduction has been continuously written since 2018. This was already submitted to State Councilor Schellhorn last summer. There are already no more test days on weekends and upper noise limits have been introduced for the cars, says managing director Ernst Penninger.
Penninger is also open to questioning whether a racing weekend with historic vehicles is still up to date in terms of noise pollution and exhaust fumes. According to the residents’ advisory board, private trips by motorist clubs would be the most burdensome.
