Listen to a report on the Czech Wikipedia, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary today
“In 2002, everyone was writing articles on basic topics, such as water or Prague,” says Urbanec.
The uniqueness of the Internet encyclopedia is that the users write articles themselves. “There are about a thousand of those active who have at least one adjustment in a month on the Czech Wikipedia,” adds Urbanec.

Read the article
Maybe sometimes Wikipedia is open. If there is any doubt about an article, the administrators solve everything. When someone writes an article with completely meaningless text, the administrator can delete it immediately.
“If we are talking about an article, for example, according to some of the wikipedians, it does not meet the rules of encyclopaedic significance, we must start a discussion about deletion,” explains Urbanec.
Next, one has to explain why I think the article doesn’t follow the rules. According to Urbanec, discussions on deletion are based exceptionally.
‘It’s a hobby’
The most popular topics usually copy current events, but they also include the slogan Czechia. This is very extensive and there is also a musical sample of the Vltava by Bedřich Smetana.
Among the active wikipedians are students and workers in various fields, including teachers at universities. For example, Jitka Erbenová works at the University of South Bohemia and has been writing articles on Wikipedia for fourteen years.
“It’s a hobby. All authors are volunteers. We work for everyone after working hours, in our free time, “adds Erbenová.
There are about 503 thousand entries in Czech on Wikipedia. More and more are being added and added.
