The educational program of the Municipality of Athens “The child, the city and the monuments”, participates in the events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor catastrophe with educational activities, speeches, screenings of documentaries and films and an exhibition specially designed for students and teachers!

On Wednesday, May 11, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at the Innovathens building, in the Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens, the speech of the writer and educator Nikos Andriotis will take place, entitled: “Arrival and settlement of refugees in Athens”. The speech will be accompanied by a short screening of audiovisual material of the International Red Cross.

The topic of the speech was the arrival of the refugees in the autumn of 1922 in Piraeus, their rough “settlement”, the actions of the Authorities, state and municipality, private bodies and foreign humanitarian organizations, to satisfy their basic needs. (accommodation, food, medical and medical care). Reference will also be made to the health measures taken (disinfection, vaccinations), to the special care for orphaned or unaccompanied children and to the effort to decongest Piraeus and Athens.

Then their final housing will be presented by state bodies and the Refugee Rehabilitation Committee, where it will take the form of general rehabilitation. Mention will be made of the problems that have arisen, as the differentiation of refugee housing by region. But as urban rehabilitation would be long overdue, covering a small proportion of refugees during the 1920s, a brief reference will be made to the later phases of refugee housing after World War II.
