Ramadan in Amsterdam concluded with the Sugar Fest: “This is really a holy month”
Ramadan has come to an end and that is celebrated by Islamic Amsterdam with the Sugar Fest. Many Muslims fill the day with commandments, many delicacies and being with family. At Boulangerie Nador on the Bos en Lommerweg, there is a storm this morning with people doing the last shopping for the Sugar Fest breakfast.
“It has been busy for three days, since the day before yesterday,” says baker Badr El Moumni. “We have long lines. Yesterday was the last day of Ramadan and today we celebrate Eid. It’s all delicacies,” he continues.
Many Muslims start this holiday with a prayer and then go to the bakery to do their breakfast shopping. “I bought cookies and cakes for the kids,” says a visitor to the bakery. Another explains: “It is a formation of a family that comes together and in the morning the morning prayer becomes together.”
holy month
With Sugar Feast a period of thirty days of fasting is concluded. The holy month of Ramadan is a month of reflection, says the chairman of the Taqwa Mosque in Nieuw-West. “You abstain from food and all sorts of other things that are done on a daily basis.” Bakery visitors also report that they have had a positive experience of the month: “Ramadan is truly a holy month and fun to celebrate.”
