“More than ever used for our claims“: on the placards of the demonstrators, the slogans parade, on this Sunday, May 1, 2022, International Workers’ Day. Nearly a thousand people gathered in the city center of Caen for the traditional parade. In the procession, many trade union formations (CGT, Solidaires, Sud), but also several left political parties like the militants of the Popular Union, the movement of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
Six weeks before the first round of the legislative elections, the members of the Popular Union sent the message of their leader: “Mélenchon Prime Minister.” “This May 1st has a special flavor, explains Emma Fourreau, co-host of the Young Insoumis. We want to put an end to Emmanuel Macron’s policy of social damage.”

Activists from Europe Écologie les Verts, from the Socialist Party but also from the Radical Left Party proudly display their flag. For them, there is absolutely a counter-power in parliament. “The first five-year term was one of observation, believes Franck Guéguéniat, vice-president of the Radical Left Party. The second will be that of all dangers.” First danger for the unions present at the head of the procession: the pension reform.
Other gatherings are taking place in different towns in Calvados and Orne on May 1 (Bayeux, Lisieux, Condé-en-Normandie, Alençon).
