Parties – Munich – CDU and CSU demand readjustment of security policy – Bavaria
Berlin/Munich (dpa) – As a consequence of the Russian war against Ukraine, the CDU and CSU are calling for a readjustment of German foreign and security policy. What is needed is “a turning point in German politics,” says the draft of a paper that the presidencies of the two Union parties want to adopt at a meeting in Cologne this Monday. “What matters: Think security comprehensively and act accordingly.” Germany will also have to take on more responsibility in the world.
The draft of the “Cologne Declaration” is available to the German Press Agency, and the Berlin “Tagesspiegel” also reported on it. “Germany needs a danger radar, the country must measure and evaluate all of its dependencies,” it says. These include threats, dangers from terror and organized crime, disinformation campaigns and all forms of extremism, but also climate damage and dependencies in the economy, technology, energy supply and food.
The CDU and CSU are calling for the German defense forces to adapt “to the new reality”, for a comprehensive security strategy and for a national security council to embody the new security policy and present it to the outside world. “Economy and employees, science and innovation drivers, civil society and think tanks” should also be integrated into the work. What is needed is “a common new way of thinking about security and sovereignty”.
Because the security of Germany includes “also the security of jobs and income”https://www.sueddeutsche.de/bayern/.”Therefore, Germany needs a new globalization strategy that deals more with the growth opportunities in the EU, the USA and Africa and reassessed dependence on China,” the paper said.
In climate policy, the CDU and CSU demand that the necessary reorganization of energy policy must be “consistently used to accelerate energy efficiency, renewable energies and technological innovation”. They also advocate a “climate club of international pioneers” that combines progress in climate protection with economic opportunities: “Climate, energy, human rights and security are considered holistically.”
CDU General Secretary Mario Czaja told the German Press Agency: “From the point of view of the Union, the turning point brought about by the war requires a policy of security in our country – building up a comprehensive danger radar in close cooperation with Europe and the USA in order to analyze dependencies and actual alternatives “We want to secure the German economic model, and we want to see European and German climate policy as part of security and think holistically. “We also have to talk openly about security issues – big and small.”
