Prague – The congress of the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions will continue in Prague today. President Miloš Zeman should speak at the event of the largest trade union headquarters in the Czech Republic at 10:00. The unions will then debate their strategy for the next four years.
The trade union confederation covers 31 unions with several hundred members. Their representatives elected leadership for the next four-year term on Friday night. Josef Středula became the old-new chairman. Vít Samek and Radka Sokolová defended their vice-presidential positions. The trio has been in the lead since 2014.
Zeman last spoke at the union congress eight years ago, but did not visit him four years ago. Středula noted that this will be the first public appearance by the head of state after a long time. The CMKOS leader sees a big symbol in the fact that the president is to speak at the trade union congress.
In February this year, Zeman ranked the head of the unions among the possible candidates in the fight for the Castle. Wednesday’s presidential ambitions have been talked about lately, he has not officially announced his candidacy. Three years ago, he told ČTK that he was seriously considering participating in the presidential election.
Today, the congress participants want to debate a strategy for the next four years. Středula has already said that the headquarters wants to continue to promote faster approximation of Czech earnings to incomes in Western countries. He wants to support the modernization of the economy, calls for the creation of a national plan for economic growth. The government’s proposals are now mostly criticized by trade unions. The CMKOS leader recently threatened trade union protests.
