Young Zurich parties raise spirits for voting age 16 – TOP ONLINE
In the TELE TOP article, the campaign manager, Florian Fuss, and the co-president of the Junge Mitte ZH, Mike Halbheer, talk about the “democracy update”:
Young politicians are involved in the referendum campaign in Zurich. On Wednesday you placed a banner on the Quaibrücke and drew the attention of passers-by to the possible “update” in our democracy with a flyer campaign.
The Zürcher GLP brought the issue of “voting age 16” to the table. About half a year ago, Parliament approved the initiative. The plan is for 16-year-olds to have a say in cantonal and communal votes and elections. However, they cannot yet be elected to an office – the eligibility age should remain at 18 years.
If the constitution were to be changed, the canton of Zurich would be only the second canton in Switzerland, after the canton of Glarus, to introduce the voting age of 16.
Not all young politicians are 16 for the voting age. The young politicians of the FDP and also those of the SVP are against it.
