Desert: region of the globe characterized by rainfall of less than 100 mm per year, extreme temperatures with absolute records of heat and cold and where the population density is very low. The hot and cold deserts contain, on the one hand, several hundred plant and animal species, a life that has developed unique mechanisms to adapt to extreme situations, and on the other hand, invaluable underground riches.
