Prague will set up an interdisciplinary municipal group for the construction of the O metro
The current management of the city plans to build a new line in connection with the future development of brownfields in particular. These areas will need to be connected to public transport, so that people do not have to travel through the busy city center.
In fact, several areas have emerged in Prague that are important in competing with the traditional Prague center in terms of job opportunities and concentration of services. Among them are, for example, Smíchov, Pankrác and Karlín. In the future, Bubny-Zátory in Prague 7, the former Žižkov, Vysočany Freight Station or the northeast of the city, ie Letňany, Kbely or Čakovice, will become similar centers.
In the case of road transport, it will ensure the interconnection of road circuits. In public transport, the connections do not have sufficient capacity. The metro promotes the Prague leadership due to its reliability, large capacity and environmental friendliness. “At the same time, the metro is the means of transport with the greatest degree of competitiveness vis-à-vis individual transport, which is mainly due to speed and reliability,” the approved document says.
The new line O should lead from the Podbaba Railway Station via Dejvice, Smíchov, Dvorce, Budějovická, Vršovice, Žižkov, Vysočany, Čakovice and then in the second phase north back to Podbaba. According to the initial design, it would measure about 36 kilometers and there would be 23 stations on it. The roundabout appeared in the metro construction plans as early as the 1980s.

The task of the working group will be to prepare a specific assignment for the feasibility study. The group will be composed of experts in transport, territorial development, sociologists, social geographers, architects or economists. Representatives of municipal companies such as Ropid, which plans Prague’s public transport, DPP or the Institute for Planning and Development (IPR) will be invited. The city will also discuss the plan with the state Railway Administration.
Last week, the Transport Company (DPP) and the city management began construction of the first part of the new line D from Pankrác to Písnice. Part of the route from Pankrác to Olbrachtov and then to Nové Dvory will be the first to be built. The cost of the entire route to the Písnice Depot will be approximately 100 billion crowns. The first passengers will cross the track in 2029.
