About 450,000 schoolchildren study Russian in Ukraine – Ministry of Education of Ukraine
About 450 thousand schoolchildren in Ukraine are taught in Russian, said the head of the department of general secondary and preschool education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Yuri Kononenko in the comments to the project Radio Liberty “News of the Sea of Azov”.
“The class where education is only in Russian is 35, and where education is in both Russian and Ukrainian, there are about 400. In 424 educational institutions, we were taught in Russian, or completely all classes, or partially – there are classes with both Ukrainian and Russian. This is an education where children study in Russian, there are a total of 82,700 such children in Ukraine. In addition, there are 3951 institutions of general secondary education where the Russian language is assessed. There are about 450,000 such children studying Russian,” Kononenko said.
He also revealed that the number of children who study in his English or chat is constantly declining.
“In 2013, there were more than 1,100 schools where all classes were taught in Russian. Now only 35 such schools remain. The number of children learning Russian has also significantly increased,” Kononenko noted.
