Macron or Le Pen? Hundreds of French people are electing their president in Prague
The French abroad voted more strongly in the first round than those in France also voted for the current president. Half a million of them came to the polls worldwide, ie about a third of those enrolled. Macron won 45 percent of the vote in their first round. The left-wing Mélenchon finished in second place in the votes from abroad with almost 22 percent. More often than Le Pen, who won five percent abroad in the first round, they also elected former French controversial journalist Éric Zemmour and Europe Ecology – Greens (EELV) candidate Yannick Jadot.
In the overall results of the first round, Macron advanced with 27.84 percent and Le Pen with 23.15 percent.
There are 3394 French voters registered in Prague, of which 1898 came to the polls in the first round. Two weeks ago, 37.87 percent of voters threw a ballot for Macron at the Smíchov high school. Mélenchon finished second with 23.09 percent, followed by Jadot (11.38 percent), followed by Zemmour (10.90%). Le Pen was sixth in Prague with 3.56 percent, beaten by Republican (LR) candidate Valerie Pécresse (4.84 percent).
The French are still facing parliamentary elections
French voters, including those in Prague, will return to the polls on June 12 and 19, when there will be parliamentary elections. They will decide which government the elected president will work with today and whether they will be from the same political camp. Mélenchon has already begun talks with other left-wing parties about a possible coalition, and has said he should be the next French prime minister.
