Landlords need to be wary of tenants
Many apartment seekers in the city of Zurich are completely desperate. Year after year, more and more people are looking for an apartment in the city, but affordable housing is becoming increasingly rare. Some become particularly creative – in extreme cases even extremely pushy.
In order to make someone looking for an apartment stand out from the crowd, some try to write to landlords via social media. Particularly pushy ones go one step further and visit the landlord at their private address.

Tenants take too expensive apartments
“That’s why I recommend advertisers to omit last names, telephone numbers, street numbers or even street names and not to publish pictures of the house facade or personal e-mail addresses. In this way, they avoid desperate people looking at their front door,” says Nadia Loosli, operator of the city of Zurich’s housing newsletter Immomailing, in an interview «Handelszeitung».
Due to the housing shortage, tenants tend to buy apartments that are actually too expensive for their own budget. “Some people pay rent above their means to be able to live in the city,” says Loosli. She sees the increasing number of offers in the “Temporary and furnished” category as an indication of this. Loosli suspects that tenants want to cushion their high expenses in this way, for example during the holidays. “Or as a way to be able to afford vacations at all,” she told the “Handelzeitung”.
Beware of the additional costs hammer
Especially when calculating the additional costs, the real estate expert urges caution due to the high energy prices. “One or two tenants will find themselves in an uncomfortable situation when the utility bills come next winter or mortgage interest rates rise.”
In order for those looking to be successful despite the housing shortage, she advises activating all personal channels, relying on personal letters of application or even expanding the search geographically. (smt)
