US: New sanctions against individuals and entities in Russia
The United States today imposed new sanctions on hundreds of individuals and entities, including a Russian bank and a cryptocurrency mining company, in hopes of halting Moscow’s efforts to circumvent sanctions on its invasion of Ukraine.
The US Treasury Department said in a statement that it had targeted the Russian bank Transkapitalbank, whose representatives are said to be promoting ways to circumvent international sanctions.
It also targeted a “global network” of more than 40 people and entities led by Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev. Among them are organizations “whose primary mission is to facilitate the circumvention of sanctions on Russian entities.”
Washington has also imposed sanctions on companies in Russia’s cryptocurrency sector, which is said to be the third largest in the world. These include BitRiver and ten of its subsidiaries based in Russia. The ministry warned that the United States had decided to ensure that no corporate assets were turned into a mechanism by Russian President Vladimir Putin to compensate for the sanctions.
The Russian embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment on the new round of sanctions.
