investigation closed after racist insults against Kompany during Bruges-Anderlecht
Belgian justice decided on Tuesday to end the procedure introduced in December following racist insults against Vincent Kompany. The Anderlecht coach had denounced discriminatory proposals from Bruges supporters but did not win the case.
An investigation into racist remarks at the meeting of Anderlecht coach Vincent Kompany, made during the match of the Belgian championship Bruges-Anderlecht on December 19, was dismissed Tuesday by Belgian justice.
The file is closed without further action because “it is impossible to know who held what to propose”, indicated the prosecution in a press release relayed by AFP. During the match, the players and the staff of Anderlecht had been the target of racist comments from the supporters of FC Bruges.
A matter of state in Belgium
Vincent Kompany, Belgian with Congolese origins, had shared his “disgust” after these events and the prosecution had opened an investigation. But “the evidence is insufficient. The criminal case is therefore closed without further action” indicated the prosecution.
According to the Belga agency, at the end of February, the King of the Belgians Philippe, challenged by the facts, had received Vincent Kompany to discuss racism in football. The case caused a stir in Belgium.
Besides the iconic former Manchester City and Red Devils defender, his friend and ex-teammate Romelu Lukaku had expressed his disgust for racist fans in a dynamic message posted on social media. Himself the victim of insults in Italy, the Chelsea striker had demanded firm sanctions.
“I hope you will take concrete action, had urged ‘Big Rom’. That one like Vincent Komany is insulted because of his skin color … Enough is enough! your hashtags, take action now.” Obviously Romelu Lukaku’s appeal was not heard by Belgian justice.
