The second division footballers from Hannover 96 fought for a point in the 0-0 draw against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday evening with a strong defensive performance and despite being outnumbered for 75 minutes.
It was the scene that gave a surprising party a change of direction: in the 16th minute Düsseldorf hit a long ball into the top. Hannover’s Niklas Hult wanted to clarify as the last man. However, the Swede also looks at the bright sun when looking in the direction of the approaching leather – and overlooked Rouwen Hennings.
Hult fouled the Fortune attacker and was consequently sent off with a red card. After that, 96 barricaded themselves in their own half and also took advantage of the fact that the weak guests couldn’t think of anything offensive.
“I can only give the team a huge compliment for their efforts.”
96 coach Christoph Dabrowski
“The team invested a lot. We’re happy to take the point,” said Hanover coach Christoph Dabrowski. Due to the also goalless draw between Dynamo Dresden and Holstein Kiel on the 30th matchday, the “Reds” hold the lead on relegation place 16 with seven points.
Good start follows the red card for 96
It all started so promisingly for the hosts: Hannover continued the good performance against Erzgebirge Aue in the early minutes and had more play and chances. Sebastian Kerk (6th) and Dominik Kaiser (12th) check Fortuna keeper Florian Kastenmeier. Then Hult flew – and the decimated “Reds” tried to reorganize. “We were good in the game for the first 15 minutes. The red card was very bitter, but we wanted to take the momentum from the early stages and then changed tactically. And Düsseldorf couldn’t find any solutions,” said Sebastian Kerk after the game.
additional Information
This was due to increased willingness to run and good pressing. 96 defensively kept the guests, who were outnumbered, at bay, but could not do much in front themselves. The game flattened out, there were no more chances for either side except for the shot over the goal by Fortuna’s Khaled Narey (27th) until the half-time whistle.
Hanover closes the bulkheads
The 17,250 spectators also saw football delicacies in the second round. With its two chains of four, Hannover formed a defensive bar that got on Düsseldorf’s nerves and successfully prevented them from scoring. The hosts had to share their power, counterattacking was out of the question.
In the end, the “Reds” passed the character test against Düsseldorf with a solid team performance, who delivered a very weak performance in terms of play. Both teams remain neighbors in the table: Hanover is 14th, just one point behind North Rhine-Westphalia, who are currently in twelfth place.
