One-sided Rheinderby – Cologne presses and hits at will
1. FC Köln underpins its ambitions to take part in the European Cup. The Geißbock-Klub won the one-sided Rheinderby at Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 and jumped to sixth place. Coach Steffen Baumgart’s team went into the game with a vengeance and brutally and efficiently put pressure on Gladbach’s build-up game. Borussia made mistakes and left the spaces open – Modeste was the first to say thank you and scored the early FC lead. Goals two and three came with similar advances: Kainz’s announcement in the 20th minute, Ljubicic made it 3-0 at half-time. After the change of sides, the Gladbach team waited in vain for a reaction from the Hütter team, and the performance was almost pompous. Only Hofmann, who also had VfL’s greatest chance in the first half, approached dangerously. After all, Embolo scored the consolation goal in the 85th minute.
Dortmund dismantles Wolfsburg in 14 minutes – Haaland’s flute ends
The weakened Wolfsburg defense lasted 24 minutes in Dortmund, then BVB rolled over Lower Saxony within 14 minutes: Ironically, the 17-year-old Bundesliga debutant Rothe opened the scoring for Borussia, then it happened in quick succession because the VfL defense dissolved. Haaland confrontation for Witsel – the scorers for 3: 0 and 4: 0 were called Akanji and Can. Only then did Haaland use the space offered and make it 5-0 at half-time. For the Norwegian, his longest peat whistle in the black and yellow dress ended after 422 minutes. In the second half, Haaland filled up the half-dozen – after this goal, the Rose-Elf took their foot off the accelerator and caught the consolation goal by Baku in the final phase to make it 6-1.
Freiburg lightning start and CL dreams – red for Stafylidis and coach Reis
SC Freiburg keeps the dream of the Champions League alive. The Breisgauers beat VfL Bochum 3-0, are level on points with Leipzig and one point behind Leverkusen – the two teams will face off at the end of the day on Sunday evening. The Streicher-Elf got off to a good start against the promoted team from Revier: Kübler scored after five minutes. Then Sallai came on the scene and only found out quickly, before he probably put the lid on it shortly after the change of sides with the 3-0. In the remaining time, Bochum allowed Stafylidis to miss out completely, which was punished with red. In addition, VfL trainer Thomas Reis was probably a bit too loud in this scene and was also given a red card. A completely used day for VfL, while the people of Freiburg were happily hugging each other.
Relegation duel in Augsburg: Hertha increases and lives again
In Augsburg there is an existentially important duel for Hertha BSC – only a win at relegation rivals FCA would keep the belief in the league alive. The first section was hotly contested, the hosts actually had the better chances, but for 45 minutes there was a lot of toughness and hectic to marvel at – including pack formations, with Boateng right in the middle. After the change of sides, however, the Magath-Elf showed their footballing side: The ex-Augsburg judge served Serdar, who scored the Berlin lead with a heel. Augsburg was now challenged, but the Weinzierl team lacked the precision for real chances. In addition, the Hertha team, which had been so soulless recently, showed a real fighting spirit this time and brought the narrow lead over time.
Zero night in Mainz: VfB slips to 16th place
The duel between Mainz and VfB Stuttgart ended without a goal. Although the Swabians had a shorter phase in which they could have taken the lead, coach Bo Svensson’s team was closer to scoring, especially in the second period. Due to the draw and the simultaneous victory of Hertha in Augsburg, the Stuttgart team slipped back onto the relegation place. On the next matchday, VfB has to play at Hertha.
