Contemporary art on display among the rose gardens of the Volksgarten in Vienna – nearby Austria – Blog
The Weltmuseum Vienna it presents itself as a place to connect cultures and people. As such it is dedicated to the cultural diversity of humanity and wants to document the historical links between Austria and the world in its collections from all continents. At the heart of the museum, the permanent exhibition in 2017 was redesigned in a completely new way, linking historical artifacts and contemporary interpretations. There are more than 3000 objects and numerous photographs on display. The displays reveal the often unexpected connections between Austria and the world.
From the 23 June until 31 January the Weltmuseum Wien will host the first overall exhibition of theMaori artist George Nuku in three locations: in the galleries and in the column room of the museum itself, as well as in the Temple of Theseus located in the Volksgarten gardens, which will be the location of the project “Ocean in a bottle 2122 “.
What do the roses mentioned in the title have to do with it? The “Temple of Theseus” a neoclassical style construction is surrounded by more than three thousand rose plants of 400 different species. Many of these plants have cards attached to them, bearing the names of the people who “adopted” them. For 350 Euros it is in fact possible to become a supporter of a rose plant, and perhaps dedicate it to a loved one. The initiative, promoted by the Austrian Federal Gardens, has been so successful that it is currently necessary to adapt to the waiting list in order to be able to adopt a squad.
Other curiosities related to the Volksgarten gardens. This is the first Viennese public park, born in 1823, thanks to the will of Emperor Francesco I. This is why it is called Volksgarten, or “garden of the people”. It houses a beautiful monument dedicated to Empress Elisabeth (better known in Italy as Sissi) in Art Nouveau style and a disco-club much appreciated by the public.
