Frankfurt am Main: Ban on dancing at a Jewish memorial
After a dispute about salsa parties at a Jewish memorial, the city of Frankfurt has now issued a ban: Respect for the victims leaves “no leeway”. There is a risk of a fine of 100 euros.
After a dispute over salsa parties at a Jewish memorial near the European Central Bank (ECB), the city of Frankfurt reacted with a ban. The city announced on Thursday that all activities that do not do justice to the area as a place of peace and quiet and to commemorate the annihilation of Jewish life in Frankfurt are prohibited.
The city went on to explain that dance meetings are not compatible with the dignity of the place: “Even the respect for the victims who were deported from this place to the Nazi mass extermination camps leaves no leeway for such behavior”. The consumption of alcoholic beverages, singing, making music and the operation of music and loudspeaker systems are also prohibited.
Violations would be punished with a fine of 100 euros, the city said. The same was enacted for the site of a former synagogue in the Höchst district. The city police will monitor the areas based on the legal change and intervene in the event of violations.
