Calexico returns to Greece with a new album!
Calexico know how much we missed them and they return, her Thursday 28 Julyin Technopolis after 22 whole years. Who does not remember their Dionysian appearance with mariachi lus de luna in September 2000? On their last visit to Greece, in 2018, Calexico “scored” 2 sold out concerts at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. In perfect coordination with the audience, they created a magical atmosphere full of images, melodies, emotion. They left us with the longing and anticipation for their next visit. This time they will complete the Thessalonikion July 26 at the Festival of the Monastery of Lazarists, in which they did not appear since 2015 and Larissaon July 27 at the Alcazar Municipal Garden Theater.
THE Joy Burns he sends us his message without revealing much about their performances this year: “Hello! I’m Joey from Calexico. We have good news for you in Greece! We’re coming for 3 concerts! In Thessaloniki, Larissa and Athens. see you soon ”
During this time they achieved a lot. The British legend of music Robert Plant (Led Zepellin) with the American singer of bluegrass country music Allison Kraussadapt it “Quattro (World Drifts In)” by Joey Burns and John Convertino on the album “Raise the Roof”. In June 2019, Calexico and Sam Beam’s Iron & Wine released “Years To Burn”, their first joint album since their collaboration on EP In the Reins. And they were found Nominated for two awards – one nomination for Best Americana Album for “Years To Burn” and one for Best American Roots show for “Father Mountain”.
The band takes its name from the city of Calexico, on the border of Mexico with California., comes from Tucson, Arizona, counting decades of career and with fanatical friends around the world. The city of Tucson is not far from the border with Mexico. So it’s natural that the sounds from the guitars, violins and trumpets of the neighboring mariachi reached the hangouts of Joey Burns and John Convertino when they were growing up. In 1996, when the Calexico were starting, they found musical support in the American tradition, in the music heard in the flat cities of the American border, in the sounds of the vast desert and the endless streets.
On April 8, 2022 they released their new album, “El Mirador”, the tenth in a row and brightestin which the Sergio Mendozathe singer – songwriter Gabi Moreno from Guatemala, the Spanish rocker Jairo Zavalathe poet Pieta Brown which offered two of her poems and of course Sam Beam of Iron & Wine. “El Mirador” is a promising kaleidoscope of rock, bluesey influences, Cuban guitars and Latin American references. It was created in the home studio of their regular partner Sergio Mendoza in Tucson, Arizona – a pandemic shelter. There they tried and experimented throughout the summer of 2021 to finally create one of their most quirky and unexpected productions. “I’ve been playing with Calexico for about 15 years and I admire Joey and John’s constant search for new sounds.” “After so many albums,” he adds, “I’m really proud that we were able to achieve something so fresh together.”
It combines favorite memories of the familiar southwestern scenery and cheerful noisy neighborhoods with a moving erotic reference to the deserted border landscapes. The spooky.
“El Mirador is dedicated to family, friends and the community,” says Joe Burns, Calexico singer, multi-organizer and co-founder. “The pandemic has highlighted all the ways we need each other, and music happens to be my way of building bridges and encouraging inclusion and positivity. it ultimately triggers change and movement, “he added. “The album tries to convey openness, ability and honesty. Look around you. If you’re in the North, you also need a South to live in balance. We all breathe together.”
After nearly thirty years of music together, Joe Burns and John Convertino continue to suggest new ways. “El Mirador” highlights the brightest side of the band that wants to break the gloom of pandemic and isolation. It is rich and inclusive, inspired by the influences of cumbia, mariachi and the colorful and unclassified sounds of the southwestern American countryside.
In “El Mirador” Calexico mix not only music but also cultural tiles, the unique social and linguistic intersections found on the US-Mexico border, in a world without borders but with endless possibilities. A world of open horizons.
Their music is an amalgam of traditional Latin sounds (mariachi, conjunto, cumbia, tejano), along with country, jazz and post-rock. Calaexico are so unique and original, that for them the term “desert noir” was born. The title of the album refers to the Mayan culture, it is a large pre-Columbian installation in Guatemala. It flourished from the 6th century BC. and until the 1st c. The center is dominated by the monumental “El Mirador”, a tall tower that inspects and protects the area.
This is “El Mirador”, standing tall and steady, supervising and inspecting, a gallery, a lighthouse in the dark.. It shows us the path of inner search, the path of the heart, invites us to substantiate our ties to the Earth and its people, and illuminates with optimism the path forward.
After so many years on the road, Calexico’s music remains borderless, romantic, looking up and down the horizon in search of their new adventure. With the band in full composition, all their great successes in their suitcases and a new strong optimistic album, Calexico make every artist’s dream come true, and they are preparing to take us on an evening of love, lyricism and joyful melody in Thessaloniki, Larissa and Athens.
