The ACM wants to be reassuring about the future of the Monaco Grand Prix
While F1 wishes to further increase the number of Grands Prix and announces that it is ready to do without certain historic routes, in order to target new markets, a path already taken for a few years, Michel Boeri, the boss of the Automobile Club Monégasque (ACM), organizer of the Monaco Grand Prix, wanted to reassure the fans on Tuesday during the traditional general meeting of the body of commissioners, which precedes the three events which will take place in the Principality in the coming weeks (e-Prix, GP history and F1 GP).
“In the press, we mentioned difficulties after this edition, that is to say from next year, to continue to organize Grands Prixhe said in Monaco Gazettewhile the contract linked to the ACM and Liberty Media ends this year. It was understood that the prices asked by Liberty Media were too excessive for Monaco and that the Grand Prix was no longer working. It’s totally false ! »
“We are still in discussions with them and we will now have to concretize by signing a contracthe added. I can guarantee you that after 2022 the Grand Prix is confirmed to take place. I don’t know if the contract will be for three or five years, but that’s detail. »
“You have to take into account the history, but also the spectacle offered”
A few days ago, after the official arrival of the Las Vegas GP next year, Zak Brown, the American CEO of McLaren, questioned the future of the Monegasque race for Reuters: “Monaco has always been F1’s most glamorous party. I think Miami, Singapore, Las Vegas are starting to add some pretty glamorous markets. I believe Monaco needs to align with the same commercial terms as other Grands Prix and maybe also need to work on ways to adapt their track, because as our cars have gotten bigger, racing has gotten more difficult. We must take into account the history, but also the spectacle offered. There is also an element, which should not guide our decisions but which should be taken into account, namely the economic contribution to the discipline. I’d rather have Monaco than not have it… but just as the Championship is bigger than a driver or a team, I think it’s bigger than a Grand Prix. »
