Halsema sent ‘protest barbecue’ Pegida in front of the mosque Amsterdam
NewsMayor Halsema forbids anti-Islam organization Pegida from demonstrating in front of the El Tawheed mosque in West on Tuesday evening. The ‘protest barbecue’ must be moved to the vast Erasmus Park.
In a short mosque makers Halsema writes that she fears ‘disorders combined with the cramped street in which the mosque is located’. “There are also conflicting fundamental rights, namely the right to demonstration and freedom of expression versus the right to confession of faith,” said the mayor.
Pegida, which planned to hold a ‘TerQ Tour Ramadan 2022’ for mosques in several cities during the fasting month, has to move to the Erasmus Park. The organization told the police that it “wanted to demonstrate against Islamization and the traditions of a fascist ideology.” The announcement of the demonstration follows a series of hate posts that, among others, Amsterdam mosques have received.
Sheher Khan, Denk party leader, is relieved that the demonstration has been moved. He brought a week earlier to the attention of the college. “The mosque indicated that it would not wait for it during the holy month. There have been disturbances before, and it is an organization known to provoke. They are completely concerned about that.”
Mayors in Utrecht, Eindhoven and Schiedam have also put a stop to demonstrations in front of mosques.
