Prague Zoo: Převalský’s horses are racing in Dívčí hrady in a new line-up
10.04.2022 9:45 | Press Release
The herd at Dívčí hrady will grow with more Převalský’s horses and foals. The Prague Zoo has now released the gelding Nepomuk and the mare Vereda here in the spring. On the contrary, the current inhabitants of Khamiina and Lana moved to the kennel in Dolní Dobřejov so that they could burn themselves with the stallion. However, both mares will return over time to give birth to foals.
“This is a step towards a permanent expansion of the herd. When both taken mares get pregnant, we’ll come back, maybe with another mare. In the future, there will be six to seven adult horses at Dívčí hrady – and eventually perhaps two foals. It’s complicated, but at the same time it’s the best way to have a sufficient number of reels here, “explains the curator of ungulates Barbora Dobiášová.

The return of four-year-old mare Khamiina and five-year-old Lány is planned after mating with a stallion. This is likely to happen at the end of June, after being associated with it during the breeding season. They were replaced in the corral at Dívčí hrady by the almost thirteen-year-old gelding Nepomuk and the almost five-year-old mare Vereda. They added three-year-old Xicara and four-year-old Gruhne to the existing herd. The individual mares were selected in such a way as to guarantee the greatest possible genetic diversity of the group for future reproduction.
“For the combination of the herd with the neutered stallion, we decided that all mares should not get pregnant synchronously and thus have enough time to properly place the born foals. The thirteen-year-old gelding Nepomuk has already been tested in a group of mares in Dolní Dobřejov, he guards the mares and is reasonably dominant, so he plays the necessary role of a stallion in the herd, ”explains the gelding Dobiášová.
The new inhabitants will stay here permanently, expand the herd together with the well-known foals and thus help with the grazing of the almost twenty-hectare paddock. Natural grazing grasses offer to return to the local original community of plants and animals.
The current inhabitants of Dívčí hrady
Nepomuk is a gelding who plays the role of a stallion in Dívčí hrady. He was born in May 2009 in Slatiňany, from where he left for Dolní Dobřejov a year later. Nepomuk was launched at Dívčí hrady this spring.
Vereda was born in Prague in May 2017. Her father is stallion Len, who is a descendant of mare Orlica III – the last captured Převalský horse in the wild. At Dívčí hrady, Vereda was launched together with Nepomuk.
Gruhne comes from the Belgian Reserve d’Animaux Sauvage, where he was born in July 2017 and from where she traveled to the Prague Zoo kennel in Dolní Dobřejov two years later. Mare Gruhne was released last April along with Xicara, Lana and Khamiina.
Xicara was born directly at the Prague Zoo in July 2018. It was launched at Dívčí hrady last April.
