The Swedish Super Series enters the second game weekend on Saturday, April 9 as Tyresö Royal Crowns, recently returned to the Premier League, playing host to the defense Swedish Master Örebro Black Knights.
The Royal crowns last played in Superserien 2017 but two years earlier 2015, Tyresö went undefeated in the regular season and was surprisingly knocked out in the semifinals by Örebro.
The Black Knights come after a close 26-23 loss last week against Stockholm Mean Machines in the opening match of Swedish season.
Tyresö enters the match under head coach Carl Haglind with high expectations. This is not a beginner’s lineup Royal crowns has gathered with veteran and Team Sweden quarterback Phil Juhlin under center. Juhlin also serves as offensive coordinator and was a key to the success of the team’s undefeated season 2021 in the lower division and promotion to Sweden top league. Another veteran and Tyresö product starts at running back, Emil Knutsson. Knutsson is definitely a quality defender. He was the rushing leader in the top league three years in a row, and won the title with Carlstad 2020 and with Stockholm in 2018 and 2019. The receiving corps of Edwin Taborda, Niko Peterson, Mattias Gauthier and Dovyda’s “Dovve” Koncevicius is just fine.
Juhlin is looking forward to the season:
“This feels very cool. This is the third team I have played for in the Super Series and the second time I have been able to help a team get up. I was in Kristianstad Predators 2013. It will be an interesting year. We will also to play in the Scandinavian Cup. We have the potential to play 13 matches in total with all the tournaments. I am really excited about our chances. “
Defensively, Tyresö has recruited linebacker Ali Chakkour from Mean Machines and hooked Team Sweden winger Malcolm Engström who played last year for Potsdam Royals in German football league and the year before with Mean Machines.
For Black Knights, quarterback Trevor Vasey leads a powerful unit. 6’7 ″, 220 pounds, 28-year-old Vasey threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another 67 yards last week against Stockholm and can make things happen with both his arm and his feet. With veteran defenders Tim Göransson and K Wedberg together with an outstanding receiving corps led by Team Sweden wideout Johannes Lindeus, who got 99 yards at the start of the season last week, Örebro will test Tyresö secondary.
On defense, the front seven are unchanged from last week and include 6’3 ″, 307-pound defensive lineman Tristen Cox, along with Team Sweden Sebastian Nilsson, and Martin Jappinen and linebackers Rikard Carlsson, Edvin Jönsson, Josh Murphy, and Filip Jönsson. The secondary has the other Murphy brother, Eric and Cewin Eriksson.
