Transportation. Annecy in the top 10 cities with the most carpooling in France

Sugar Mizzy April 8, 2022

While the price of fuel has exploded in recent weeks, the French are looking by any means to reduce the bill for their journeys. And carpooling is becoming one of the preferred solutions for drivers.

But where do we carpool the most in France? The Klaxit application has unveiled a ranking of cities (outside Paris) and regions most adept at this means of transport.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region 4th, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur only 8th

At regional level, with 16,116 trips made by carpooling in February 2022 (all operators combined), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes ranks fourth, logically ahead of Île-de-France (143,169 trips), the Pays de Loire (21,354) and Occitanie (16,504). The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region is further down in the ranking since with 8,356 collective journeys recorded, it ranks “only” eighth.

Surprises in mind, Annecy ahead of Lyon

On the side of the cities, there are quite a few surprises. While Paris was not reported in this ranking, it is Rouen which comes first with 11,766 carpooling trips, followed by Angers (7,968) and Montpellier (7,396). In our regions, two municipalities in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes are in the top 10 of the cities where people carpool the most in France: Annecy is 6th (6331) and is clearly ahead of Lyon, 9th, (3575) which nevertheless has a more inhabitants (125,694 against 513,275).

Bordeaux, Lille, Nice, Strasbourg, Rennes and Grenoble, which are nevertheless among the most populated French cities, are absent from the Top 10.

In the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, six cities in total made more than 1,000 carpooling trips in February 2022. Annecy is obviously the leader with 6,331 trips recorded in February. Lyon is therefore second with 3575, Chambéry takes third place with 1756, Porte de l’Isère is 4th with 1667, Albertville 5th with 1030, and finally, Grenoble is 6th with 1014 journeys.

Top 6 cities* that carpool the most in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

1 – Annecy (Haute-Savoie): 6,331 carpooling trips in February 2022

2 – Lyon (Rhône): 3575

3 – Chambery (Savoy): 1756

4 – Isère Gate (Isère): 1667

5 – Albertville (Savoy): 1030

6 – Grenoble (Isère): 1014

… Saint-Etienne (Loire): 400

… Valence (Drôme): 199

* Only the city center is named but all the municipalities within the territorial jurisdiction of the Mobility Organizing Authorities (AOM) concerned are taken into account: Greater Annecy CA, Transport SM for the Rhône and the Lyon conurbation (SYTRAL), CA Grand Chambéry, CA Porte de l’Isère (CAPI), CA Arlysère, Grenoble-Alpes-Métropole, Saint-Etienne Métropole, Valence-Romans travel

Marseille, which ranks 10th nationally (3,001 trips), is despite everything the city where people carpool the most in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Marseille is ahead of three municipalities located on the Côte d’Azur Nice (2,844), Monaco (2,103) and Sophia-Antipolis (1,246).

Note that the most carpooled route in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, but also the 2nd in France, is Annecy to Switzerland (2775).
