Peppered prices! This is how expensive asparagus will be this season – BZ Berlin
Asparagus Inflation? Shouldn’t be there in 2022 … At the start of the season, the precious vegetable starts with the record price of previous years. But already at Easter it will be cheaper, the farmers promise.
He is finally back! With asparagus queen Joelina (17), hit star Dagmar Frederic (76) and ex-prime minister Matthias Platzeck (68, SPD), the Beelitzer celebrated the asparagus tapping on Thursday.
At the same time, the stalls in Berlin open – with hefty prices.
A kilo of the thickest, flawless white sticks of the best quality on the farms around Beelitz costs EUR 14.90, thinner asparagus EUR 8.90. But asparagus farmer Jürgen Jakobs (56) admits: “At the sales booths, a kilo even costs 17 euros, the same price as last year.”
Why, when the expensive Corona requirements for the asparagus cutters, washers and packers have now been dropped? Jakobs: “The minimum wage has risen to 9.82 euros, as have the energy costs.” In addition, there is still a tight supply: “We currently cut 10,000 kilos a day,” says Jakobs, “Berlin and Brandenburg need 200,000 kilos a day.”
Before Corona, the top price was 12 euros. That’s how much you pay if you don’t eat asparagus for another week. Jakobs: “Prices will fall by two to three euros at Easter.”
Save even more if you wait until May for purple asparagus that grows without environmentally harmful plastic films. Secretary of State for the Environment Anja Boudon (53): “I hope that more people will accept the color.”
“No chance,” counters farmer Jakobs, “people want white asparagus!”
