Frankfurt Airport: Lufthansa plane to Singapore has to turn around
The problem: The machine was prepared for a long-haul flight to Southeast Asia and, taking this into account, was fully fuelled. With a full tank war the Airbus too heavy for a landing. In addition, the pilot first had to dump fuel. Nothing unusual, according to a list from the German Federal Aviation Office. 93 cases have been recorded there since 2018, the most recent entry relates to the Lufthansa flight on Sunday evening.
The list also tells us that the machine drained the fuel at about 14,000 feet (equivalent to about 4267 meters). For this, the machine flew a loop over northern Bavaria. A total of 75 tons of kerosene were dumped – a rather large amount of fuel for such an incident. Lufthansa did not want to comment on this when asked.
There is no danger to residents in the area from the fuel dump. The process IS carried out at high altitude, and much of the kerosene evaporates on the way to the ground. Most recently, a plane turned back to Frankfurt Airport on its way to Bangkok in March. The machine had to turn back because a door suddenly opened during the flight. (fr)
