Lithuania can also import liquefied natural gas from Qatar – ALWAYS
New markets for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) are opening up to Klaipeda port. From now on, it will also be possible to import them from Qatar.
“Bilateral negotiations on gas supply to Lithuania with the world’s largest liquefied natural gas supplier Qatargas started almost a decade ago. We have proved that the port of Klaipeda is safe for large carriers, and finally it will be completely healthy – we will be able to import LNG gas from Qatar. However, in order for all large ships sailing in the Baltic Sea to enter Klaipeda port safely and conveniently, we must continue to work and implement the started projects, ”says Algis Latakas, General Director of Klaipeda Port.
Currently, one of the most important projects in the port of Klaipeda is the reconstruction of breakwaters and the dredging of the port canal. The projects will increase the safety of shipping in the port and the efficiency of the logistics chain, ie the transport time of small cargoes, and the reduction of air pollution from ships by reducing the time spent by ships in the external roadstead. The largest vessels currently entering the Baltic Sea with a maximum draft of 15.2 m will be able to enter the port of Klaipeda.
“Qatargas transports liquefied natural gas in larger than standard vessels. Q-Flex gas carriers are 315 meters long and 50 meters wide. Until now, gas carriers of this size have not entered the port of Klaipeda “, says the captain of Klaipeda port Vladas Motiejūnas.
2021 78 gas carriers were unloaded in Klaipeda port, delivering 1.14 million. tons of liquefied natural gas. The main LNG importers last year were the United States, which accounted for almost 55% of total imports, Russia for 20% and Trinidad and Tobago for almost 13%.
