For a long time in the big game of the 25th round on Sunday, it looked as if Rapid could score points against series champions Red Bull Salzburg for the first time in almost a year and a half. But then came the moment of Zlatko Junuzovic, who sealed the seventh defeat in the series of Viennese against Mozartstadt (1:2). “In the long run it’s no coincidence that they win the games so late. They have incredible quality, players are not only of national but also international class. It’s no wonder that it has an effect,” said Rapid coach Ferdinand Feldhofer. Due to the late goal in the 94th minute, this defeat hurts “even more” than the others.
Matchday 25 – Master Group
Especially since it was avoidable. “It’s very bitter because you just have to clear this ball,” Feldhofer knew. According to him, his team “didn’t play well” in the first 45 minutes. After a tactical change, including bringing in Christoph Knasmüllner at the break, the guests became bolder and didn’t allow as many top chances at the back either. “I’m very happy with the second half, it was a good development step.”
Rapid’s coach couldn’t be happy about that after the final whistle. “So far I only feel disappointment. But from Tuesday we’ll look ahead again, there are a lot of positives to take away from this game,” said Feldhofer. The next chance to finally bring Salzburg to its knees again is on May 15 in Hütteldorf, by which time Salzburg should have long been established as the new champions. “They’re far superior to us at the moment, but we’ll keep trying anyway. At some point, every series ends,” said Feldhofer.
