After 70 years, the Rosellina of Florence is back to bloom
A piece of Florence has once again blossomed and filled the city’s gardens with color. This is the Rosellina Ragionieri, more well known as the Rosellina of Florence.
Born into a lineage of pharmacists, Attilio Ragionieri practiced the profession of family doctor together with the art of floriculture and it is to him that we owe the creation of the Roselline di Firenze, who won the gold medal in 1923 at the Ghent exhibition in Belgium. The flower was a favorite of Queen Elena of Savoy, which has now disappeared from the territory since the late 1950s.
For over 70 years traces of this flower had been lost throughout Italy, thanks to the war, the closure of nurseries and the disposal of private villas and their gardens. In January, Dr. Alessandra Benati and Dr. Prisca successfully researched the rose in Italian gardens. The plant was duplicated in the greenhouses of Crea di Pescia. A plant was donated to the Botanical Garden of Florence, to the Pieve di San Martino, to Villa Ragionieri and to the Municipality of Sesto Fiorentino.
In these days it is possible to see the flowering rose – small, delicate and climbing – in the garden of the Bardo, at Villa Corsi Salviati, together with the 16 thousand tulips of 45 rare varieties of Wander and Pick.
“It is true – Benati allowed presenting the research carried out – collaborating for some time with the Pacme Ong Association” The Tribes of the Earth “which deals with research and development and which acts as a scientific and cultural intermediary for the promotion of sustainable innovation and of artistic and cultural creativity, together with Dr. Prisa and a group of researchers from the University and Crea, as well as other public and private institutes, we have started the search for the lost Rosellina, which has always been much loved by the territory, requested and appreciated also by Queen Elena of Savoy, who has now disappeared from the territory since the end of the 1950s “.
