Ghost driver in accident on Antwerp Ring after chase: police find drugs in car (Antwerp)
A wrong-way driver caused an accident on the Antwerp Ring during a chase with the police on Saturday afternoon. The man tries to flee on foot, but was caught on the highway. Police found a quantity of drugs in his car.
The incident started just before 3 p.m. on the A12 in Stabroek. “The driver of a car with a Dutch number plate controls the flight from a saying,” says Jana Verdegem of the federal police. The pursuit was immediately started on the A12 in the direction of Antwerp. At the connection with the Antwerp Ring in the direction of the Netherlands, the driver suddenly made a U-turn and started wrong-way driving in the direction of Antwerp.
Some unsuspecting motorists narrowly avoided a collision with the fleeing car or one of the police cars behind it. At the height of Antwerp-North there was a head-on collision with a car driving towards the Netherlands. The placed then on foot on a walk.
“He was quickly charged by the police,” said Verdegem. This was done by the rapid response team (SRT) of the Antwerp police, which had started the pursuit from Noorderlaan. An inspector of the local police suffered minor injuries during the arrest.

The driver, a Dutch man in his late 40s, was taken for questioning. “The police found a quantity of drugs in the car,” said Lieselotte Claessens of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. The man is currently being questioned and will then be brought before the investigating judge.
The fire brigade arrived on the spot because there were previously trapped people, but as if miraculously otherwise injured. The highway was completely blocked for a while, which quickly resulted in the required traffic jam in the direction of the Netherlands. Once the fleeing car and the hit car had been towed, the police were able to re-open the highway.
