Due to the refugee crisis in schools, Prague 4 will increase the number of pupils in classes from 30 to 34
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, the assistance center for Prague and the Central Bohemian Region has handled 62,584 people. The majority are mothers with children. The numbers of children in the classrooms are also handled by other town halls.
“Based on our exception from the highest number of pupils, up to 34 children will be able to be present in all classes of the first to ninth grades of primary schools, with a maximum of 30 under normal circumstances. Irena Michalcová (YES).
The councilors took the measure due to the increase in the number of children aged six to 15, when on March 23 they registered about 1,100 more children than usual. These are the children of Ukrainian mothers who fled the war. “We anticipate that Ukrainian children will gradually become involved in our education system. At the same time, school principals guarantee that the quality of schools’ educational activities will be maintained and that the conditions of safety and health protection will be met, “the mayor added.
The change in the number of children in a class affects not only all grades in the districts of the established city districts, but also the preparatory classes of primary schools, for the rest of the new school year and for the next ten.
Ukrainian children are now learning in mainstream groups in kindergartens and primary schools, but also in the newly created so-called adaptation periods. Among other things, the children get used to staying in another country and learn the Czech language. Due to the many insufficient capacities of school buildings in Prague, other adaptation groups operating, for example in the premises of basic art schools or leisure facilities, operate.
