100-meter tower at Antwerp Central Station will be built after all: city council approves plans for area on Pelikaanstraat (Antwerp)
With the new spatial implementation plan (RUP) for the Pelikaanstraat, which the Antwerp college of aldermen approved, there is still room for a tower of one hundred meters high. Some conditions have been included with regard to extra greenery and roads for walkers and cyclists. The number of parking spaces will be 1,629 on this site.

The plans for this part of Antwerp at the Central Station have been criticized in the past. Both Deurne airport and the Antwerp district gave negative advice about, among other things, the height of the buildings. It is feared that more cars will be sucked in due to the large number of parking spaces on the site.
It is also one of the twelve construction projects that opposition party Groen has left for the governor. The party finds it difficult that project developers pay for the preparation of a RUP. By interests of the city.
Large piece of fallow land
With the RUP Pelikaanstraat, the city council wants to bring new life to a part of the city that is now being blown by a large piece of wasteland and outdated buildings. This concerns the area bordered by Rijfstraat in the north, Vestingstraat and Pelikaanstraat in the east, Lange Kievitstraat in the south and Lange Herentalsestraat, Schupstraat and Hoveniersstraat in the west.
“We strive for a sustainable mix of offices, communities, facilities and recreation”, Annick De Ridder (N-VA), alderman for Urban Development. “Thanks to this RUP, we are turning the neighborhood around Pelikaanstraat into a designed place. A neighborhood that is energetically connected with the direction.”
Other buildings lower
After the objections and objections, the design was adjusted. There is still room for a tower of one hundred meters high, but with the limitation of 28 storeys. For the other buildings, the height is to allow more light into the green public gardens and to improve airflow. The number of parking spaces on the campsite is 1,629.
The current RUP stipulates that the buildings can be converted from, for example, offices to homes. They must be durable.
big trees
Green gardens, which are generally accessible, will be added to the development of the vacant site. The developer must plant at least one large tree per 150 square meters.
Pedestrians and cyclists can easily access the movements via this part of the city. These slow connections come out in the open. Only the squares may still be treated.
