While a drop in temperatures is expected at the end of the week, the rain expected in Lyon this Wednesday, March 30 should deposit a thin film of Sahara sand on cars and public roads. A phenomenon already known two weeks ago. We explain to you.
A spring start to the week, snow expected this weekend and between the two – Wednesday March 30 – the sand of the Sahara should return to Lyon, two weeks after its last passage. Definitely, difficult to know what the day will be made of at the moment for the inhabitants of the metropolis of Lyon.
Sand blown by strong winds
A certainty, or almost, however. A thin film of Sahara dust should settle on cars and public roads this Wednesday, March 30. In question: the addition of the rain expected throughout the day, and a meteorological phenomenon already known in Lyon and France two weeks ago.
This phenomenon has a name: the sirocco. Coming straight from the African continent and the Sahara, violent winds at more than 80 km/h raise the sand of the largest desert in the world to carry them to Lyon. Some of this dust would then be deposited by the rain expected in Lyon on Wednesday March 30.

Already known two weeks ago
Tuesday, March 15 already, the Lyonnais woke up with a yellow and orange sky above their heads. The powerful flow from the south had caused sand dust to fall on the streets of the capital of Gaul. Bicycles, cars and urban equipment had then found themselves particularly dirty.
Note that this meteorological phenomenon has already been experienced three times in 2021 between Rhône and Saône. In 2022, it is therefore already the second time that the Lyonnais have woken up with a visit to the Sahara.
