The city of Frankfurt will clarify the last questions for the new construction of the municipal theater
un further stimulating the new construction of the municipal theaters, the magistrate wants to clarify some open questions and is asking the city councilors for a corresponding order. As can be seen from the current lecture by the magistrate, the city wants to negotiate with the Sparkasse and Helaba, among others, on the conditions under which a property on Neue Mainzer Straße could be purchased that would be required for a concrete new opera house. In this variant, known as the “cultural mile”, the spectacle would be built at Willy-Brandt-Platz. What is new is that the reverse solution – opera on Willy-Brandt-Platz, theater on Neue Mainzer Straße – is also to be examined.
But the “cultural mile” is not the only variant that is still available. The mirror variant – opera and theater opposite on Willy-Brandt-Platz – and a completely new building of the stages at the previous location are still possible. All variants are now to be finally evaluated, also from an ecological point of view. In addition, it is to be examined to what extent the existing, listed foyer can be integrated into the new building. The city will also negotiate with the federal and state governments about sharing the costs and will prepare an architectural competition, which can only be announced after the plot has been decided on. “In order to be able to take the next steps, we need an order from the city councillors,” explains Ina Hartwig (SPD), head of the cultural department. rsch.
