Mighty oaks
An American, an Italian and a Brit meet in Berlin – no joke, but the contemporary founding myth of a folk band. In 2014, the Mighty Oaks played at M4Music to a bunch of people when they were pretty young: plucked guitars, wistful chorus harmonies. This sound – somewhere between The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons – brought them to big festivals. But although Ian Hopper (the American) is now appearing with DJ Bobo on “Sing mein Song”, one has to say: the band has not bent. There’s no pumping chart beat in the songs of the new album «Mexico». And the obligatory remix with an EDM Fritzen hasn’t materialized either. Instead: solid folk fare. Nothing avant-garde, maybe a bit too shaky. But also really beautiful. (tw)
