City Council m of Prague approved the allocation of funds to non-profit organizations that are involved in providing assistance to people who have been fleeing the war in Ukraine in recent days.
A total of 2 million crowns is the target for the continued operation of the Food Bank in Prague and the Central Bohemian Region. The contribution of almost 1.3 million crowns was then provided by the Organization for Aid to Refugees to ensure the operation of information stands at the Central Station and at the bus station in Florence.
“The pressure on people and material resources has been huge in the last four weeks due to the effects of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. Without the involvement of all volunteers, we would hardly have managed this situation in Prague. Many thanks to them for that. I am glad that we at the Prague City Council unanimously support the financing of these two key partners of the capital, the Food Bank and the Organization for Aid to Refugees, “says Milena Johnová, Councilor. m of Prague for social policy and healthcare.
The funds allocated for the Food Bank in Prague and the Central Bohemian Region finance the collection of food from producers, farmers, schools, restaurants and hotels. The food is then distributed among about 260 partner organizations and individuals recommended by social unions or social service providers. Every year, the food bank redistributes approximately 2,500 tons of food at a cost of CZK 7 per kilogram, which is the lowest overhead cost within food banks in the Czech Republic. At the same time, he processes fresh food in the community kitchen, which is no longer served. He then delivers the prepared food to seniors in his area and also to two shelters. The organization is also engaged in educational activities aimed at reducing food waste.
The Prague representatives also approved a contribution for the Organization for Aid to Refugees, in particular for the provision and coordination of a network of volunteers and non-stop operation of information stands at the Central Station and at the bus station in Florence. The source of funding in this case is the reserve created for humanitarian aid to Ukraine and its citizens.
